How Do I…Get that Competitive Edge for Doing Research?[For Year 2 & Above Students]

In this hands-on training session, you will learn to navigate SMU PYXIS, our Digital Library which we launched in January 2009 [Read our Alert here]. If you have not yet attended the training, now is the time. You will learn how to find course reserve materials assigned by your professor, search for e-journals and retrieve articles using online databases. By the end of this training, you will discover scholarly resources in the library other than Google that you will need to use for your research projects and assignments while at SMU. This will allow you to be competitive with other students who have already been trained.

We will offer additional courses in your subject areas in September. 

This workshop is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED for ALL RETURNING (Year 2 & Above) students.

Date:  24 – 28 Aug

Time: 1 – 2 pm & 4.30 – 5.30 pm (except Fri, 28 Aug, 1 – 2 pm only)

How Do I…Use SMU PYXIS, our Digital Library for Doing Research? (for ALL NEW students who have not attended library trainings)

In this hands-on training session you will learn to navigate SMU PYXIS, our Digital Library which is different from your previous library system. You will learn how to find course readings assigned by your professor, search for e-journals and retrieve articles using online databases. Loan privileges and other services offered by the library for your benefit will also be covered.  You will discover scholarly resources in the library other than Google that you will need to use for your research projects and assignments while at SMU. These skills will allow you to be competitive with the local students who have already been trained to use our resources.

We will offer additional courses in your subject areas in September. 

This workshop is COMPULSORY for ALL NEW students [local, international and exchange] who have not attended library trainings in the earlier 2 rounds of matriculation trainings.

In this 1-hour hands-on training, students will learn how to find and locate information in the Li Ka Shing Library . Professional librarians will guide you how to search the library catalogue, eJournals and selected databases to do research for your assignments and projects – critical skills you will need while at SMU. By the end of this training, you will get a head-start in your studies and discover other useful resources in addition to Google!

This workshop is COMPULSORY for ALL new students.  Attend any ONE of the limited number of sessions listed below.  Maximum class size is 25.

Dates:  28 – 30 Jul 2009

Venues:  Library Training Room & Special Use Room at the Li Ka Shing Library, Level 5
